Once upon a Time: Stories from the Bahamas

children definitely love it!
I'm surprised to read above that "children may not like this." My children love this story tape. Many of the stories are about B'Rabbie and B'Bookkie, the Bahamian equivalent of Brer Rabbit and Brer (?). Similar to the Ananzi stories from Africa. A WONDERFUL collection, told in a wonderful Bahamian dialect: "Bee bo Ben, my story done en'". We love it.

Reef Fish Identification

Florida / Caribbean / Bahamas
A great book to bring along on a dive. It's spiral bound and about 250 pages of pictures, descriptions and everything you ever wanted to know. Eliminates the "Did you see that?" "Yeah, what was it?" "A Ray of somesort" "Yeah, but what kind, I've never seen one like that"

Reminiscing: Memories of Old Nassau
Published in Hardcover by Media Publishing Ltd. (November, 1999)
Authors: Valeria Moseley Moss and Ronald G. Lightbourn
Average review score:

A Look Back
Valeria Moseley Moss' book, "Reminiscing" combines a timeless narrative of a long-forgotten era with incredible photographs of those days gone by. The granddaughter of the founder of the oldest newspaper in The Bahamas, Mrs. Moss shows her journalistic training in each of these well-written vignettes that capture the essence of those simpler, more gracious days in the "Isles of June." The text covers the period from 1900 to 1950 and gives us a sharp, clear glimpse through Mrs. Moss' own eyes at the Nassau most of us have only heard about.

Her nephew, Ronald Lighbourn, has illustrated the book with amazing photographs so that we can also see the beauty of the place as Mrs. Moss describes it. Each photograph has a well researched caption of its own that is, in itself, highly informative and evocative, a mini-history lesson for the reader. And the photos are so clear, as if they were taken just yesterday, that I had to keep checking the captions to make sure the dates were really half a century - and more - ago.

The only problem I have encountered with this book is that, when carrying it anywhere, people are likely to take it from you to look at and are very reluctant to give it back.

It is a great read and a must for anyone who wants to learn about the past of this lovely little place called Nassau.

enlightening,soul nourishing,inspiring,uplifting,energising.
Wow, how wonderful it is to read such a jewel like this. The amount of energy, love, light, inspiration, wisdom & truth one receives from this book is infinate. Norma & Jean the authors of this book are to me obviously very pure channels to receive such profound truths. Also the beings that channel this information are truely of the light & they speak insightful truths that can be felt in the heart centre. I was so moved and inspired by this book, that I have decided to take the spiritual trip to Bimini myself & since making the commitment others will also be travelling with me. I have come all the way from Australia to make this journey & the excitment that is building inside me is indescribable. I just keep reading this book over and over and I'm always finding more meaning & truths each time. I have also strongly recommended this book to many others & they have found this book to be just as prescious as I have.

This book not only reminds us to meditate on the keys and codes of nature and our mother earth, it gives us guidance and insight into how we can embark on this journey ourselves.

I have also read Norma's book "we the Arcturians" & this book is also another prescious jewel but this is another review in itself. I highly highly recommend it.

We'll be embarking on our own journey to Atlantis on 18 December 1999 thanks to Norma, Jean & all the light beings who have created this book.

If anyone would like to email me to exchange information & energy of this nature my email address is rach_bart@hotmail.com

Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life: Florida Caribbean Bahamas
Published in Paperback by New World Publications (April, 1995)
Authors: Paul Humann and Ned Deloach
Average review score:

A great value if you can't afford the full Humann set
This is a great book for snorkelers and beginning divers! The color photographs are beautiful and make identification easy. Although this small book is nowhere near as comprehensive as Humann's complete reef identification set, it's a great bargain for those wanting to know the names of most of the common things they see when snorkeling in the Caribbean. The book also contains some valuable pointers about which plants and animals should be approached with caution, how to treat stings, and other interesting facts. It's disappointing that there are so many typos, especially considering that there is relatively little text in the book.

The Song and the Stream

Author: Steve Kincheloe
Average review score:

Captivating, hard to put down.
Once you start this novel, you will find it difficult to put down. The author keeps you on the edge throughout. You can't help rooting for "Kathleen" and "Sarge" as they debark on a dangerous mission. The Book is set in the Florida keys and the Bahamas, and the writing is such that you feel like you are right there along side. I read the entire book in one sitting and then went back and reread it again. I can't wait for the remaining two books in the trilogy!

Under the Sunday Tree
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (February, 1991)
Author: Eloise Greenfield
Average review score:

Simple pleasure
While in the Bahamas, we bought a copy of Under the Sunday Tree, with paintings by a Bahamian primitive named Mr. Amos Ferguson and accompanying poems by Eloise Greenfield. We bought it to give to a young friend, but it may be too good to give away. Fortunately, it's available here at Amazon.... The poems really make the book, and the text is simple enough that it's accessible to young readers.

The Yachtman's Guide to the Bahamas : 50th Anniversary 2000 Edition
Published in Hardcover by Tropical Island Publishers (December, 1999)
Author: Meredith Feilds
Average review score:

A 'must have' when boating in the Bahamas!
The Yachtsman's Guide to the Bahamas is an invaluable resource. A 'must have' when boating in the Bahamas. It is an accurate resource regarding water depths and warnings when navigating in shallow areas. Included were guidelines on how to approach ports of entry and tide charts.

The information regarding customs was extremely helpful. The historical and cultural information was very interesting. Identifying points of interest assists the traveler with planing activities and sight seeing.

Those that are not familiar with the less explored islands would benefit with more concrete descriptions of towns and markets.

When surveying the list of hotels/marinas on Bimini I chose the largest one with the most amenities. Upon arrival we could not have been more impressed. The accommodations at the Bimini Big Game Fishing Club Hotel and Marina are first class.

This guide is a wealth of information. I could not have imagined making the journey without it.

Cruising the Bahamas ? ----- DON'T leave home with out it!
Actually I have the 1998 edition of the same book by Meredith Fields. I was a first time cruiser to the Bahamas. We Left Ft. Lauderdale Fl. on a 40' Sailboat with 6.5' draft, sailed to West End,Grand Bahama, East across the Grand Bahama bank to Treasuer Cay, Marsh Harbour, Hole in the Wall, Barry islands, Gun Cay, and Florida again. There are many places in the Bahamas where we could easily run aground... THIS BOOK WITH ITS SKETCH CHARTS AND DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS ARE PRICELESS..... DONT CRUISE THE BAHAMAS WITH OUT IT.. The Bahama Islands are so vast that even if I lived there I would not go far without consulting it as a guide. PS: I gave this book a rating of 5 stars only because I could not give it more.... it deserves 10 stars.
