Fully indexed, the guide delivers an insider's view to what the authors call 'the most hospitable islands in the world.' Not a typical guide, the book is as much fun as it is resourceful, with a chatty writing style... great suggestions for sites to visit when travelers are in the mood for something unusual or spontaneous." An excellent take-along guidebook.

Reef Fish Behavior: Florida Caribbean Bahamas
Published in Paperback by New World Publications (01 November, 1999)
Authors: Ned Deloach and Paul Humann
Average review score:

This is a real "must-read!"
I'm a scuba instructor at a resort in the Caribbean, and this is the book I rely on most heavily (yes, even more than Snyderman's Marine Life & Humann's Reef Fish ID!) in explaining what's going on. It's also the book I recommend to everybody who comes to the Lodge, and the one they enjoy the most. So, whether you're a snorkeler or a marine biologist, you'll gain a lot from having this one in your collection!

Knowing What Your're Looking At Underwater
RFB ablely illustrates and explains the fish actions commonly observed by divers and snorkelers. This volume will increase the novice's understanding and enjoyment of the acquatic environment. The pictures are excellent and the author nicely translates scientific jargon to readability. The binding is sturdy but flexible so it is easy to pack into your dive bag. However, I expect that most dive destinations will have a well thumbed copy on hand soon. My only criticism-- Ned doesn't deal with my favorite box fish. This is a great book. I expect to carry it with me on every dive trip.

Excellent Book
This is a wonderful synopsis of behaviors that I didn't know existed. It is well written with great pictures showing the enormous amount of time underwater that it must have taken to compile them. It has made me look at the reef in a whole new way.

Deliervs as advertised
The title says "Dive Sites of the Bahamas" and it delivers. Specific descriptions, exact locations, and details on the dive site (depth, currents, visibility, etc.)

My only wish would be for more. Essential for anyone planning a dive trip or cruise to the Bahamas.

More than meets the eye
This is a great book to pick up if you're even thinking of going to the Bahamas. Great pictures, comprehensive dive site reviews PLUS the book is loaded with lots of extras that make it one of the best dive books I've seen. Pages of fishID info with color photos, dive medicine, travel tips -- all in a very attractive package.

High

Author: Carlton Robinson

High
I really enjoyed reading this book. At the end... I wanted more.

Bahamian female soulmates endure abandonment and cocaine.
Conflicts do exist between the body, will, and spirits. Women play the role as primary holders of spiritual powers above men. It has been scientifically proven that human genetic history can only be traced for eons through the female of our species. So the Obeah witchdocter Barbey must find a way to locate Coranna using only her twenty three year old navel string.

When ever an agressive go-getter lover like Morganna attempts to return to a sweet, lil homey, in Coranna, there is bound to be conflicts on both sides. After all, in time two people can become strangers because of new experiences that bring on change and growth.

So stranger meets stranger. We all know about forgivness, anger, revelations, hurt and pain. Who gives? What about abandonment, anguish, mental abuse, loneliness, physical abuse, and just giving it all up to start all over again. But with soulmates, can love be denied. I pity Coranna. Then to top it off, she ends up with a sweet devoted teen lover in Sasha. She embodies the enduring lover.

When a man the likes of Knuckles with millions from the cocaine trade decides to work on your woman, you have problems. Yet sometimes it can be convenient, that is if the female couple wants to have a child along with lots of money. But which lover can stomach knowing that the money you spend belongs to a man. For the sake of love go out and get your own.

In 'HIGH' Coranna does try to get her own. Only, as in Bruce Porter's 'BLOW' she messes it up. The author, himself, a former cocaine addict gets down to the highs of the cocaine highs. So Coranna takes you on a ride.

The Bahamas of the eighties, with curruption among the highest of the government officials allows a most notorious Columbian cocaine kingpin a freehand in trafficking drugs to Florida. The officials facilitate all aspects of protection, even to work agaisnt the government of the United States. A butch lesbian Tomboy is the Columbian's, Bahamian-point-person. She is more ruthless than a man.

The United States Govenment and the DEA make it their business to stop the trafficking, but they always hindered by the Bahamian government. Then steps in NBC, and its investigative reporter Ross, who did indeed expose the great extent the Bahamians protected Columbian cocaine shipments.

The mystical side of this novel is overwhelming as Barbey must make contact with Coranna before his death, which is fast approaching. He must upload all of the spirits of the ancient worlds into her. Already Barbey was rescued from death by a spiritual seed Chiesne. In Chiesne, readers get a glimpse of pre-Christopher Colombus Bahamas and get a chance to live in harmony and nature with the Lucayans.

This is a great threatise from the Bahamas, and probably one of the most interesting pieces of fiction to come out of the Caribbean. 'High' details occult Obeah rituals and the trappings of the world pressured by modern United States of America.

The book shows that lesbian love can be enduring, and that spiritual forces do exist beyond.

I COME TO GET ME

its really good
this book is really good, the author, arlene ferguson came to talk to us about it and she showed us a real junkanoo hat and everything. the pictures are really interesting and the history is brilliant (a word she used)!!

Real Junkanoo Revealed
This book is a "true-true" part of Bahamian history. Very few books have been written about the history of this cultural festival and this one is phenomenal. Nash-Ferguson gives a first person account of the entire process and history of the festival and the reader truly feels a part of the experience. The graphics and layout of this book are also wonderful - from the scene displayed through a piece of ripped cardboard on the cover to the shots of the costumes throughout it is easy to see why Junkanoo is considered true Bahamian culture by many.

Many Tastes of the Bahamas: & Culinary Influences of the Caribbean
Published in Hardcover by Caribbean Productions (September, 2002)
Author: Lady Igrid Darling
Average review score:

An outstanding compilation of Bahamian & Caribbean Cuisine!
As an American descendant of Bahamian immigrants, I've always been fascinated by my family's tales of delicious island dishes. Many of those dishes were duplicated here in South Florida when my great-grandparents immigrated to the States, but many others remained a mystery to me. Imagine, then, my delight at finding Lady Igrid Darling's wonderful compilation of Bahamian and Caribbean cuisine. It's a great mix of the sophisticated and the every-day. As I read the recipes to them, my mom, aunts and cousins sat around reminiscing and sharing stories about the various mouth-watering dishes, fresh fruits and vegetables contained therein. This delightful cookbook brought back memories for my family, and will now build memories for me. At their insistence, I've now purchased three additional copies for my mom, sister and others to share. I'm thrilled with my purchase and will use this cookbook for many years to come, both learning about and sharing my culinary heritage with today's generation of Allen descendants.

Scrumptious & Easy!
Lady Igrid Darling, former First Lady of The Bahamas has put together a fascinating and thoughtful cookbook. Even if you live in New York city there will be a Caribbean store somewhere if you want to do some of the more traditional dishes. But there are plenty of recipes with easy-to-obtain ingredients that will bring The Bahamas to your dining room. I love the photographs and wonderful detail that Lady Darling has in this cookbook. Even her helpful tips are unique for olde and new cooks alike. And the recipes range from those prepared for Heads of State to creative everyday meals. This is one of the best cookbooks on the market at such a good price!

Shadows on the Flats: The Saltwater Images of Chet Reneson and Ed Gray (Images)
Published in Hardcover by Willow Creek Press (October, 1997)
Authors: Ed Gray and Chet Reneson
Average review score:

A GREAT book for those who love the flat or the Bahamas.
This is both a beautiful (the art of Reneson) and a thoughtful (the writing of Gray) book. It is not a "how to" book, but rather a book to set your mind for a good trip, or to reflect on a past trip. If you can't be there, this is the next best thing.

Wonderful book!
Most fly fishermen are artists at heart. This wonderful book does not disappoint. Reneson's watercolors are among the best out there and a perfect complement to Gray's essays. This book will nourish the soul of a fly fisherman on a cold night.

The Abaco Guide: A Cruising Guide to the Northern Bahamas Including Grand Bahama, the Bight of Abaco, and the Abacos
Published in Paperback by Seaworthy Publications (December, 1998)
Authors: Stephen J. Pavlidis and Stephen Pavlidas
Average review score:

Stephen P Has Been There and Done It
I have cruised the Bahamas aboard all kinds of small boats for over 30 years, and I wouldn't go without Stephen P's books. There have been many Bahamas cruising guides written but many fall far short of the complete story.
Stephen P. has spent many years in the Bahamas. His guide info is virtually faultless. His charts are the best and amazingly accurate. This is not always the case with other guides. His stories and "local knowlege" is historic. He spends countless hundreds of hours on sight to obtain the information needed to produce a really good guide. He is an active ham radio operator so you can talk to him anytime and discuss his works.
I guess it's obvious that I love the Guide. Stephen Crow K4CPX

Book of Shells: A Shell Game
Published in Paperback by Cemac Enterprises Ltd (November, 1995)
Author: Cecile Mactaggart
Average review score:

A must for Caribbean holidays
A wonderful book for those who wish to engage in the game of collecting shells - beautifully illustrated and written. While the book is written at an adult level, an engaging card game is included to amuse and educate young shell collectors. Mactaggart is clearly passionate about shell collecting and her enthusiasm comes through loud and clear. The author's discussion of the ethics of shell collecting is especially apropos. Thou shalt not kill a living animal for its shell, nor support such behaviour in others. Her simple philosophy and respect for the islands shines through the pages of this book, for readers young and old.
